Pioneer Elementary

Composting

Pioneer composts fruit and veggie scraps from lunch into compost tumblers. We use the compost in our garden plots to amend the soil. Some of the lunch waste is used to feed our worms, worm castings are used in the garden beds also.

Paula Bradley, science teacher at Pioneer, oversees students who are in charge of weighing food scraps daily, keeping a log of weight of the food scraps and temperature of compost.

Recycling

Parent volunteers oversee recyling at lunch time, keeping students on track about what gets recycled and what does not. Students recycle aluminum, clear plastic, and paper, and compost fruit and vegetable waste.

Custodian

Beatrice Carrillo handles custodial duties for Pioneer, including the recycling project. She works with the recycling site coordinator and the principal to make sure the school has enough recycling bins and dumpsters for paper, plastic, cans and glass and also sets up our lunch time recyling area with garbage cans, compost buckets, and recyling bins. Our noon duty aids also work hard to remind the students of their recycling duties and making sure everything gets put in its place.

Site Recycling Coordinator

Sonya Kiernan works as the liason between Pioneer's recycling needs and the district Garden/Recycle coordinator.
