Marguerite Montgomery Elementary

As a new school, Montgomery is just beginning its school garden and composting progrects. During 2003-2004, the school is moving ahead with plans for a garden site, composting capability and the new recycling program during breakfast and lunch.

School Garden Coordinators

Custodian

Stan Hagen handles custodial duties for Montgomery, including the recycling project. He works with the recycling site coordinator and the principal to make sure the school has enough recycling bins and dumpsters for paper, plastic, cans and glass.

Site Recycling Coordinator

Nicole Starsinic works as the liason between Montgomery's recycling needs and the district Garden/Recycle coordinator. Nicole is on-site once a week to help students sort their lunch waste.

Composting

Judy Fleenor, 6th grade science teacher, oversees the development of the school's composting system. During the 2003 - 2004 school year, students studied the how's and why's of composting and the impact on the waste stream. Students weigh the compost bucket daily and have participated in a number of activities to determine impacts on the waste stream.
