Cesar Chavez Elementary Four years ago, students at Chavez
filled 10 garbage cans with trash every day at lunch. Today we use less
than four. Many factors have contributed to this reduction. Styrofoam
trays have been replaced with recyclable cardboard; students are
learning which kinds of plastic containers can be recycled, and fruit
and vegetables are set aside to be composted. Our students are willing
to learn and use these recycling strategies-we just need to teach them
the skills. Composting/RecyclingAt Cesar Chavez we have 15 5th and 6th grade recycling helpers who work weekly shifts, composting the lunch fruit and vegetable waste. Up to 20 pounds of fruit and vegetables are diverted from the landfill each day. Several first grade students also help during their lunch period, standing by the recycling bins and reminding their classmates on how and what to recycle. Students recycle paper, plastic, aluminum and glass. Here are a few tips on what to recycle. **
